Gmail Imap support

As everyone who has gmail on their iphone know it can be severely frustrating and boy did I get excited when I saw this post gmail-now-supports-imap and since the article was just a tease and didn’t any specific information on how to accomplish this I did some googling and came up with various links in regards to setting up gmail with imap. Some of which were simply just too much effort, the title says it all: Gmail, IMAP, and iPhones – Part 2 – The Tutorial.

Google page explains in details how to enable this feature on your gmail account

The sad thing is though that my account didn’t seem to have that option. But then I created a new account and the option is there (see pic below). I sure hope that they’ll roll this out to my account. But in the meantime I’ll play with my new account.

According to gmail though it’s their intent to roll it out to everyone before too long. They also released a video demonstrating how to set up your iphone

.00 dollars and cents

Nothing cheers me more than when my bank or a credit institution claims that I made an error. One particular error pleases me more than others, it’s the one that occurs every time I pay my my credit card bill.

Error: Please enter an amount in dollars and cents. Be sure to use a decimal point. For example: 1234.56 or 413.00 or 1,234.78 or 345,678.00 [see here]

I entered 300

I think it’s a bit of an overstatement to call what I entered an error … just because they lack the courage to either make the assumption that I though .00 to be assumed or simply ask me to verify the amount they would guess I had intended to enter. Calling it an Error is taking things a bit far. No wonder many people are terrified of computers if they keep being programmed to blame users for things that could have been though out a little more, or at the very least explain beforehand that they expect the amount in dollars and cents.

bash [terminal] directory navigational tips

For a bash novice like me it’s often hard to argue why working in the terminal is superior than not working in the terminal. Then I find something like THIS a page that explains ways to quickly jump around directories in the terminal by using CDPATH, pushd and popd. Even with tab completion navigating up and down directories with cd can become very tiresome and those three commands can alleviate that pain. The page explains it better than I will be able to but here is the gist of things.

CDPATH
By setting your CDPATH to for example

export CDPATH=/home/{user}/sites:/home/{user}/documents

it will allow you do simple do

cd foo

and it will drill down into directory by the name of foo in the ~/sites folder.

This will take over a directory by that name in locations defined after ~/sites in CDPATH and even if you are trying to go into foo in the current directory

pushd
If you are in a directory and you know you will be going there again soon you can put it into a dirs stack with the command pushd . and then you go to another dir and by doing popd it will throw you back to the dir that is first in the dirs stack.

As I mention before it is sometimes hard to explain how the terminal can be a better place to do your work so trying it out is the best way to get more and more comfortable with it.
